Hua Zui Ba, Zoo Madrid’s female panda came in estrus on Saturday April 20, 2013. Her behavior and hormone levels pointed out that it was the right time for breeding. Zoo Madrid’s first option has been the natural mating, and although male panda Bing Xing showed more interest in the female, there wasn´t a successfull mating. Hua Zui Ba was artificially inseminated on Saturday evening with fresh semen from Bing Xing.

Zoo Madrid cooperated with the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and the Universidad Complutense and the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Tecnología Agraria y Alimentaria for the procedure.

Let’s hope it will be as succesfull as 3 years ago, when Po & De De were born at Zoo Madrid. The only surviving panda twins outside of Asia.
