
CCRCGP announced today that Gao Gao passed away on November 24, 2025.
The male giant panda Gao Gao became about 33 years old.
He was rescued in the wild in Baoxing on April 6, 1993 and was presumed to have been born in September 1992.
He lived at the San Diego Zoo in San Diego, California, U.S.A. from January 15, 2003 until October 30, 2018, where he sired 5 offspring with Bai Yun: Mei Sheng, Su Lin, Zhen Zhen, Yun Zi & Xiao Liwu.
Gao Gao was already at a very old age when he returned home. He received special attention and care from the CCRCGP staff for his high blood pressure, heart disease and arthritis.
On the morning of November 22, 2025 his keeper noticed that something was wrong with Gao Gao's health. His condition improved slightly after receiving some medication, but a CT scan was made on November 23, 2025. Lung issues were noticed on the CT scan for which he was treated immediately by the veterinarians and he was fed fluid food. At around 11:45 on November 24, Gao Gao suffered from a sudden weakness in his hind limbs and breathing difficulties. Despite all efforts to treat him, he passed away at 14:30.
Gao Gao will be missed, but he will always have a special place in our hearts.
