Hao Hao will soon return to China to receive specialized medical care

It is with deep emotion, but also with hearts full of hope, that Pairi Daiza and the Chinese authorities have made the decision to bring Hao Hao back to her homeland.

Since March 2025, Hao Hao has been suffering from moderate ascites.

After months of continuous care provided by Pairi Daiza’s veterinary team, together with experts who came especially from China, her condition is currently stable, but still requires highly specialized medical care. Both parties have jointly decided that Hao Hao will return to China to receive the best possible treatment from the world’s most experienced specialists. Hao Hao’s departure is planned for early December. Starting this Sunday, Hao Hao will be in quarantine. If she wishes, she will remain visible to visitors from her indoor habitat.

Hao Hao arrived at Pairi Daiza in February 2014. From the moment she settled in the heart of the “Middle Kingdom” garden of Pairi Daiza, she captured the hearts of millions of visitors. Hao Hao brought us immense joy by giving birth to three cubs: Tian Bao, and the twins Bao Di and Bao Mei. These three pandas returned to China on December 10, 2024.

Xing Hui, the male giant panda who arrived with Hao Hao in 2014 and the father of the three cubs born in Belgium, will remain at Pairi Daiza. Pairi Daiza will continue to work hand in hand with its Chinese partner on the ongoing conservation program for the giant panda.

Out of respect for Hao Hao, who needs peace and serenity, no public farewell ceremony will be organized on the day of her departure.
