DC8 017Bei Bei, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s giant baby panda, went outside for the first time on February 4, 2016 — a move marking another milestone in the young cub’s life and popularity.

The zoo noted the occasion on Twitter with the headline “Look who’s stepping outside!” Bei Bei was accompanied by mom Mei Xiang. A 15-second video from the zoo shows the cub outside with his mother nearby and then the little one climbs a tree.

Bei Bei is also eating solid foods now and nibbles on bamboo leaves and likes sweet potato, the zoo said.

The giant panda cub was born in August, along with a twin, which died a few days later. Bei Bei’s name imeans “precious treasure” in Mandarin.

Bei Bei, who now weighs about 25 pounds, made his public debut in January.
